March 3, 2010: Thanks to Roberto Alsina, @ralsina on identi.ca, for the suggestion to mention  using zeroconfig announcement of LAN hostnames making it easier to connect (not needing the host IP address): http://lateral.netmanagers.com.ar//weblog/posts/BB844.html
The link shows a video of a bunch of steps about making avahi work.

Setting up zeroconfig/avahi sounds like tasks that the guru/tech should plan to do ahead of time in planning for giving someone support on the local network.
