Kinfocenter entstand als Teil von Kcontrol und ist eine alleinstehende Anwendung seit KDE 3.1. In KDE SC 4.0 bis 4.4 wird es durch Module ersetzt, die in den Systemeinstellungen konfiguriert werden, insbesondere Solid. In KDE SC 4.5 wird es als Anwendung wieder eingeführt.
